The hearings that the Presidential Commission for Electoral Reform will organize starting today in the United States will have a different format than those held in national territory. Given the current situation that compatriots are experiencing in that country and to guarantee their safety, they will be through videoconference, announced the president of this instance, Pablo Gómez Álvarez.
Interviewed after one of the hearings of this commission, held yesterday at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior (SG), Gómez Álvarez explained that the spaces intended for the participation of countrymen living in the United States will be headed by Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, head of the Office of the Presidency and member of the commission, who will not attend in person, but will be present virtually from the SG.
He said that at this moment there are no conditions to hold crowded events in the United States, “and there are also the problems that you know in relation to migrants.”
He explained that some of the speakers will be at the consulate, but others will not, depending on the conditions.
“There are so many Mexican consulates in the United States, but they are very small, they don’t have auditoriums, nothing like that. And then we didn’t want to do things outside of the consular headquarters (…) we discussed it a lot and finally we came to the conclusion that the virtual route was the safest and we are going to receive opinions.”
In total, there are seven hearings scheduled so far for Mexicans in the United States, which will begin today afternoon with the one in Los Angeles, and will continue later in Sacramento, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta and Washington.

On another note, when referring to the forums aimed at electoral reform that have been organized at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Electoral Institute, as well as those that will be held in the Chamber of Deputies, he stated that they have also listened to the proposals that have been made in those spaces and will collect all those that are presented, as well as the opinion articles that are published in the media with this same objective.
