Electoral reality, politics and demagogy

Valentine jumps into the void

In the Dominican Republic, the word demagogy never “goes out of style.” However, it is on the political level where it manifests itself most frequently.

But, for the better edification of readers, let’s go to the origin of the word demagogy, according to the explanation of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language.

“Demagogy (of Greek origin) is a strategy used to achieve political power that consists of appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and hopes of the public to win popular support frequently through the use of rhetoric, misinformation, agonotology, propaganda and politics”.

In our society, degraded without brakes, the political leader -the one who practices demagogy the most, and does it in an Olympic way- usually offers “even everything he does not have” to win followers.
But it is in electoral campaigns when we most observe this attitude that is typical of the fakers of partisan politics.

Yes, it is the proselytizing practice of those with the purpose of reaching the voting masses -when it comes to aspirations in the electoral processes- and win their sympathies.

I clarify that in the universe of the country’s political actions, not everyone falls into the same rotten bag of demagoguery and traditional falsehood. Of course not!

In the landscape of vernacular politics we have positive examples. Examples of leaders (who we can classify as consistent political leaders) who with their healthy attitudes and electoral promises have managed to penetrate the population.

A precision: This article is not to quote -and highlight those good attitudes- names of political leaders whose praxis has not been covered in cheap demagogy.

Likewise, if I had to mention names that have been the protagonists of demagogy and hypocrisy, I would cite them without fear…besides, the list is very long!

You don’t have to dig too far to “discover” the frauds of the broad segment that can be inserted into the behavior of Dominican political leaders who are full-blown demagogues.

And they act without compunction with a view to gaining the trust of the people. Of the optimistic voters who always do not hide their confidence in the same demagogue political leaders who aspire to reach the honey of power.

But, what should the people do to throw down all the traditional demagogue (political) paraphernalia?

Answering the question is the task of the authentic political leaders who, without showing demagogic attitudes, can demonstrate their abilities -with effective electoral platforms- and who can convince the great voting majorities.
