The Association of Electoral Officials of Uruguay (AFEU) announced that it is declaring itself in pre-conflict, given what they consider a lack of compliance by national representatives with respect to the commitments assumed with the sector.
The union indicated that, in the run-up to the budget discussion, they held meetings with more than 30 legislators from all political parties, who recognized the officials’ claims as “valid and legitimate.” Subsequently, AFEU appeared before the Budget and Finance Commission, where it reiterated the need to improve the working and salary conditions of electoral personnel.
However, they stated that after the Committee voted on the Budget, the group’s proposals were not included in the articles, which generated deep discomfort in the organization.
“We will not allow the arduous task that workers carry out in pursuit of greater democratic quality and the responsibility that this entails to continue to be ignored,” the Board of Directors said in a statement.
The association recalled that the sector has one of the lowest salary levels in the State, despite the relevance of its functions in the organization of electoral processes.
Currently, officials are dedicated to the organization of the University Elections, but AFEU does not rule out taking measures to affect tasks if the government does not fulfill the promises made.
The statement ends by reiterating the workers’ commitment to democracy, but also their decision not to allow their labor and salary rights to be ignored.
