Elections in Türkiye: Erdogan accuses Biden of having ordered his overthrow

Turkey buries Sweden's ambition to join NATO for now

Türkiye celebrates tomorrow the most decisive elections of the last 20 years. The polls predict a victory for Kemal Kiliçdaroglu in the presidential elections, although it is possible that he will not achieve the absolute majority that would avoid a second round in two weeks

The President of Turkey, the Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accused his American counterpart, Joe Biden, this Saturday, May 13, of “having given the order” to overthrow him, and again accused the opposition of bowing to the interests of the West and to attack Russia.

“Biden gave the order to overthrow Erdogan, I know. All my people know it, “said Erdogan in one of his last rallies before the presidential and parliamentary elections this Sunday, which polls predict will end his two decades at the helm of the country.

In this sense, the Turkish president stated that the “ballot papers will give an answer to Biden tomorrow.”

Erdogan also accused his main rival in tomorrow’s presidential election, Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, of attacking Russia, an economic and political partner of Turkey.

Despite the fact that the opposition leader has assured that he will maintain those ties with Russia if he is elected president, Erdogan rebuked him for “preparing” sanctions against Moscow.

He also accused the opposition bloc, which also includes nationalists and Islamists, of being infiltrated by the LGBT community. “We believe in the sanctity of the family. If the family is weakened, the nation will be weak,” he said.

In the parliamentary elections, neither the Erdogan bloc nor the opposition alliance is expected to achieve a majority, so the role of the leftist and pro-Kurdish HDP party, which the current government has brought to the brink of outlawing, will be decisive.

In some cities affected by the earthquake on February 6, where at least 50,000 people died and thousands more were injured and homeless, citizens expressed anger and frustration at alleged favoritism in providing care to communities.

Gülcan Durur, a nurse who survived the earthquake in the city of Hatay, recounted that “it is difficult to breathe. Our house has disappeared, our life has disappeared, our standard of living has disappeared. She also has no hope in Sunday’s elections. “I am relatively sure that nothing will be done here even after the elections.”

While Professor Mehmet Durur stated that he had lost his home and those closest to him. “We have lost everything. Then come these electoral promises (…) But we don’t want to hear about the elections. While we suffer here, the others only think of their own interests.
