Attention, citizens. In the next elections on April 12, the alternative digital voting mechanism will not be used, reported the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).
The electoral body adopted this measure after the ruling of the National Elections Jury (JNE) in which it concluded that digital voting was not applicable due to deficiencies that could not be corrected before important electoral milestones were concluded.
On this issue, the ONPE highlighted through a statement that, without restriction to the autonomy, powers and competencies that correspond to it in accordance with the Constitution and the laws, “it has decided not to use the alternative digital voting mechanism for the 2026 general elections, being temporarily suspended.”
“The ONPE will rule in a timely manner on the audit report carried out by the JNE, as well as on the audit being carried out by the North American company CGTS Corp. This company – which has had experience in auditing digital voting – has been hired to carry out the audit required by Law No. 32270,” the document indicates.
He added that the purpose of digital voting has always been to facilitate the electoral participation of Peruvians who usually have serious difficulties in approaching a voting location.
Likewise, ONPE detailed that it will continue working on the development of the tool that allows these citizens to exercise their right to vote.
“Citizens registered on the Digital Voting platform will not lose their right to vote in person. The ONPE will contact them and provide them with the necessary support to define their voting location,” the institution stated.
