Your votes will be decisive in the general elections on April 12. The number of Peruvians authorized to vote abroad reaches 1,206,760, according to information from the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec).
This group represents a significant 4.41% of the total number of voters, which at the closing of the preliminary registry —on October 14, in accordance with what is established in the electoral schedule that establishes this procedure 180 days before the elections—, add up to 27 million 356,578 Peruvians qualified to vote.
The preliminary figures of the electoral population presented by Reniec also indicate that there will be more women voters (13,795,688) than men (13,560,890) in the next elections and that 2.5 million Peruvians will vote for the first time.
Lima concentrates the largest number of voters with 8,665,318 citizens qualified to vote, followed by the regions La Libertad (1,554,549) and Piura (1,535,902). The region with the fewest eligible voters is Moquegua (164,792).
Young people between 18 and 21 years old represent the largest electoral population in the country with 6.87 million ready to vote. Citizens between 30 and 39 years old eligible to vote total 5.82 million; there will be 5.07 million voters aged between 40 and 49 years; and 4.07 million, between 50 and 59 years old.
Peruvian voters over 60 years of age total 5.47 million people. Precisely in this age group, those who are over 70 are not obliged to vote.
Carmen Velarde, the head of Reniec, reported that, after submitting the Preliminary Electoral Register, it will be published by her entity from October 27 to 31, according to the Organic Law of Elections. During these days a citizen can file a claim or strike with the respective support if they detect any omission or error in their name, address, photograph or DNI number in the registry.
All these corrections will be included in a new preliminary register that Reniec will deliver on November 13 to the JNE, which will have until December 13 to approve the final voter register.
Meanwhile, next Friday the 31st is the deadline for the political parties authorized by the National Elections Jury (JNE) to participate in the electoral process, to register all their candidates for the presidential ticket, the bicameral Congress and the Andean Parliament for the primaries that will be held a month later.
