43% of the candidacies registered by the political organizations for the Regional and Municipal Elections 2022 are women, registering a much higher proportion for the positions of regional deputy governor, according to data from the document Electoral Profile No. 4 of the National Election Jury (JNE).
This report specifies that the candidacies of women to the positions of governor represent 28.2%, while those of lieutenant governor represent 71.8%. Meanwhile, female candidates for provincial and district mayors barely reach 8.5% and 9.8%, respectively.
In relation to council positions, the proportion of female applicants is 48.1%. It is observed that, although there is significant progress in this area, changes of the same magnitude are not observed in the executive type.
According to Electoral Profile No. 4, entitled “The profile of the candidates for the ERM 2022”, only five of the 12 political parties registered with the Registry of Political Organizations of the JNE keep the same proportion of men and women in the race in the positions of governor and lieutenant governor.
In accordance with horizontal parity, of the total constituencies where the political parties present formulas for governor and lieutenant governor, half must be headed by a woman and the other by a man.
In this regard, 41.4% of candidates for regional governors from political parties are women, while 58.6% are men, which shows that there is still a significant gap to cover to achieve full compliance with horizontal parity.
The political grouping with the highest proportion of women is the Patriotic Party of Peru (Three out of ten candidates for positions of this nature are women). He is followed by Purple Party (23.2%), People’s Renewal (18.6%) and People’s Force (17.8%). The smallest proportion is We are Peru (7.6%).
On the other hand, the percentage of women applicants for executive-type positions is 19.3% in the province of Lima, in four regions (Ica, Tacna, Callao and Tumbes) it ranges between 15% and 19% in; while at the opposite extreme there are 14 regions where women constitute 10% of candidates or less.
It should be noted that Electoral Profile No. 4 also indicates that women represent 63% of the total number of young candidates in the Regional and Municipal Elections 2022.
