Voters in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, chose this Sunday (27) the current city councilor Hingo Hammes (PP) to command the city hall for the next four years. The term runs from 2025 to 2029.
With 96.63% of the ballots counted, Hingo Hammes received 74.71% of the valid votes in the second round and is already mathematically elected. His opponent, Yuri Almeida (Psol), appears with 25.29%.
Petrópolis is the ninth largest electoral college in the state. According to the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ), 245,177 people were able to participate in the electoral process. There were 124 voting locations with 911 ballot boxes.
The second round of municipal elections takes place in cities with more than 200 thousand inhabitants in which the winner of the first round did not reach 50% plus one of the total valid votes. Although eleven municipalities in Rio de Janeiro could have this scenario, it only occurred in Petrópolis and Niterói. In the state capital, for the first time since 2008, the election was decided in the first round, with the re-election of Eduardo Paes (PSD) with 60.47% of the valid votes.
First round
The result of the second round in Petrópolis confirmed Hingo Hammes’ favoritism. He narrowly missed out on being elected in the first round, when he received 49.96% of the valid votes. At the time, Yuri won 17.77%.
Current mayor Rubens Bomtempo (PSB) tried to be re-elected, but finished the first round in third place, with 17.23% of valid votes. He chose not to support either of the two candidates who competed in the second round.
