The center where the elderly were cared for was founded on June 30, 2004 and is located in residential Las Colinas.

María Lourdes Chacón, administrative director of the asylum, told Article 66 that despite the news that has been spread in the media, it has not yet been notified about the closure, so it cannot refer to the case. “We are working normally, that’s why I can’t say anything,” he explained.
As for the more than 30 elderly people who are currently being cared for, Chacón said that he cannot detail what will happen to them because “there are many who have relatives and have to come pick them up, that is why I cannot give more information.”
For its part, the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) lamented the illegalization of the foundation and pointed out that “dozens of elderly people from the Sor María Romero asylum have been left homeless after the cancellation of the legal personality of the Foundation for Human Dignity , its main donor.

The Foundation for Nicaraguan Human Dignity was created by the former first lady and now a political prisoner Maria Fernanda Flores. By order of the regime, it was included in the blacklist of more than 100 organizations that were not outlawed.
The administration of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo completed the illegalization of 25 civil society organizations. With the favorable vote of the Ortega deputies before the National Assembly, the parliamentarians canceled the legal personality of the NGOs.
The legislative decree approved on Thursday, March 17, with 74 votes in favor, 16 abstentions and one present; ensures that these organizations have not reported their boards of directors and their financial reports according to the fiscal periods and detailed breakdowns as established by law. In addition, the Foreign Agents Law and the Law against Money Laundering are mentioned.
As in other illegalizations of NGOs, the Nicaraguan dictatorship could confiscate the movable and immovable property of these organizations, as happened with Popol Na, Cenidh, universities, Fundación del Río, Cisas, among others.
