Given the irrevocable resignation of the rector of the National University of PiuraSantos Montaño Roalcaba, the University assembly must accept the letter and it is expected that new elections will be called only for the rector.

The member of the University Assembly and professor at the National University of Piura, Elar Torresreported that the University Assembly, according to the statutes of the University Law, must accept the resignation and it would be up to the academic vice-rector to call elections, for which there is a period of 15 business days.
Torres explained that the elections will only be for the position of rector and who must complete the five-year period, that is, until 2028. “The University Assembly must accept the resignation presented by the rector, then upon acceptance it gives way to the vacancy. Article 76 of the University Law contemplates the vacancy of authorities, among its causes it indicates the express resignation, which has occurred, so elections must be called,” Torres said.
He clarified that the vice-rectors were elected in the last elections, so this call should be only for the position of rector of the National University of Piura, a decision that was granted by Sunedu itself, that is, until 2028.
Elar Torres said that now all the main teachers are in a position to apply in these elections and it is expected that it will be a transparent process.
It should be noted that Santos Montaño’s resignation, made on December 30, is due to his delicate state of health. However, Montaño is under house arrest for nine months in the case of an alleged bribe, in which he received 10,000 soles from a supplier. The case is being investigated by the Public Ministry.
