El Tambo: criminals try to blow up Caja Huancayo ATM

Despite the use of a dangerous method to break into an ATM, criminals did not achieve their objective and fled without taking money from a Caja Huancayo agency, located in the district of El Tambo, during the early hours of Thursday, January 2.

The attempted robbery was detected after an alert that mobilized the National Police to the intersection of the Chávez and Los Guindales neighborhoods; specialized personnel from the Explosives Deactivation Unit carried out the inspection of the place.

Gas cylinders and a battery with cables were found at the point, presumably used to open the ATM using internal pressure. After technical evaluations, any risk to neighbors and passers-by was ruled out.

The authorities confirmed that those responsible also placed metal objects with spikes on the road, known as “shark fins”, in order to hinder a possible police chase.

According to police sources, the procedure used is similar to another frustrated attack that occurred months ago in the center of Huancayo. Criminalistics agents have already begun the analysis of the security cameras and it is not ruled out that both events are related.
