Today the city of Sauce received national and departmental authorities to commemorate the 260th anniversary of the birth of José Artigas.
The President of the Republic, Dr. Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, and the head of the Canelones municipality, Mr. Mayor Marcelo Metediera, were present at the central event.
Authorities from the Municipality of Sauce, Corrientes Province, Argentina, were also present.
Within the festive framework, a twinning agreement was signed with the aim of generating an international and regional linkage strategy that will allow the development of both territories to be strengthened.
In the central speech, where the Mayor of Canelones spoke, the Artiguista values were highlighted as well as the leadership carried out by Artigas in the process of liberating feat.
The Minister of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, spoke on behalf of the Executive Branch. He stressed that for those who have responsibilities in government, the hero left a great lesson with the concepts of equality, freedom and security. Principles that guided his political actions and that are valid and relevant today.
The activities commemorating the birth will continue throughout the month with a variety of artistic and sporting events and conferences in which the community will actively participate.
Mayor Metediera called for a national dialogue on security and highlighted the social work that has been carried out in Canelones, assisting 70 soup kitchens and 40 popular watering holes.
