A total of 2,000 gang members were transferred this Wednesday, by the authorities of El Salvador, to the Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (Cecot).
This was announced by President Nayib Bukele, noting that these prisoners now add up to the 4,000 gang members who are relocated to the largest maximum security prison in Latin America and which, according to the Salvadoran president, is the “most criticized prison in the world.
On February 24, 2023, Bukele began the transfer of 2,000 gang members to this prison with a capacity to house 40,000 prisoners. Since then he has been harshly criticized by the international community for alleged acts against the human rights of those deprived of liberty.
