The vehicle’s armor prevented the journalist from being killed. The attackers were later arrested.
”El Patrón” was fined 45,000 pesos for the crime of attempted homicide and aggravated criminal association.
One of those involved in the attack assured authorities that it was Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who allegedly hired Armando Escárcega, “El Patrón”, to commit this crime and for which a payment of 500,000 pesos was offered.
Ciro Gómez Leyva himself has questioned that version.
For these events, 14 people have been arrested, eight men and six women.
Héctor Martínez Jiménez, “El Bart”, identified as the material author of the attack, was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Pedro Gómez Jaramillo, “El Pool”, who coordinated the attack, received a 12-year sentence.
