Ishmael’s defense May Zambada yesterday asked a federal court in New York to extend the sentencing hearing, scheduled for January 12, by 90 days, arguing that violence and instability in some parts of Mexico prevent the collection of key information to present elements that mitigate the sentence.
In a brief to Judge Brian M. Cogan, attorney Frank Pérez noted that “a substantial portion of the mitigation evidence must be obtained from individuals located in regions of Mexico that are currently experiencing increased violence and instability.”
