The Technological University opens a program that promises to change the future of health and education in the Colombian Pacific.
News Colombia.
El Chocó, one of the departments historically struck by inequality in Colombia, has just received news that promises to mark a before and after in its history. The Ministry of Education approved the creation of the First Faculty of Medicine at the Technological University of Chocó (UTCH), an achievement that strengthens access to higher education and, at the same time, opens new possibilities for the Colombian Pacific health system.
The decision responds to a national government mandate to bring high quality academic programs to territories that have been outside the state investment for decades.
“We are doing it in Chocó, as in La Guajira, where the Medicine Program has already been approved, and soon we will do it in Soacha. We will continue to announce openings of these programs that, together with the expansion of public hospitals, will be guarantors of the right to education and health, the two most important in every society,” said the Minister of Education, Daniel Rojas Medellín.
30 initial quotas: sow doctors from the territory
According to the Ministry of Education, the first cohort will have 30 quotas. Students will not only receive medical training, but will have the opportunity to learn from the heart of the local health system, with authorized practices in key medical centers in the region.
With this, the program seeks to respond directly to the needs of Chocó and contribute in the reduction of mortality rates, especially in vulnerable populations where the lack of health professionals has been critical.
For many Chocoanos, this news means hope.
In addition to being an academic advance, the social impact is deep: training doctors in the department will allow more health professionals to remain in the region.
The UTCH, which is currently under special measures to inspection and surveillance, also lives a process of institutional transformation. As reported by the Ministry of Education, these measures seek to combat corruption and strengthen administrative efficiency so that the new medicine program becomes a model of excellence.
