Eight Cuban rafters detained when making landfall in Key West

Madrid Spain.- Eight Cuban migrants were detained after arriving on the shores of the United States in a rustic boat on Wednesday morning.

As reported through Twitter Border Patrol Chief Walter N. Slosar, the rafters made landfall in the area of ​​Fort Zachary Taylor State Park in Key West.

According to the information note, the Cubans were taken into custody and are expected to be repatriated to the Island soon.

This Tuesday, 41 Cubans were returned to Cuba by the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Charles Sexton after several rescue operations in the vicinity of the Florida Keys.

Last week, the United States Coast Guard also repatriated 77 Cuban raftersincluding three who would have crossed the Straits of Florida on a water bike.

The number of Cuban migrants intercepted by US authorities in the last nine months already exceeds 3,000.

Since October 1, 2021, the beginning of the current fiscal year, US Coast Guard crews have intercepted 3,470 Cubans, a figure that exceeds the number of migrants from the island intercepted each fiscal year from 2017 to 2021 .

A report published last week by the Department of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed that from that same date and until July 6, 2022, 157,339 Cuban migrants arrived in the United States; amount higher than the 155,000 forecast for October 2022 by the US government.

During the last nine months, Cuba has been the fourth country from which the largest number of migrants have arrived in the United States. The Island is surpassed by Mexico (638,812), Guatemala (181,309) and Honduras (163,305).
