Eight Cuban migrants detained in Bahamas waters

MADRID, Spain.- A group of eight Cuban migrants was detained in Bahamian waters, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) reported on Monday.

The Caribbean people were spotted on Sunday in front of Cay Lobos by a patrol that was making a routine tour, led by Lieutenant Commander Alexis Brown.

After the arrest, the Cubans were transported to New Providence by a Defense Forces patrol, the entity specified through the social network Facebook.

According to the statement, they “appeared to be in good health” and were turned over to immigration officials for further processing.

In its post, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force said it remains vigilant and committed to “protecting its heritage.”

Last week the director of the Department of Immigration of the Government of the Bahamas, Keturah Ferguson, declared that the Executive of his country has spent more than 2.3 million dollars in the repatriation of migrants, mostly Cubans and Haitians, during the current year.

“It costs approximately $400 per person to repatriate to Haiti and $305 per person to Cuba,” Ferguson told a news conference.

Last June, the attorney general of the Bahamas, Ryan Pinder, assured that the numbers of migrants arriving on the shores of his country, particularly Cubans, were “through the roof.”

In this sense, Ryan Pinder pointed out: “We are seeing a significant number of Cuban immigrants entering and we believe that we have to redeploy Immigration officers throughout the archipelago to better combat this.”

From January 2022 to October 2, 2022, the Bahamian authorities had detained 2,804 migrants, including 519 Cubans.
