American scientists Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Japanese Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday for their research on how the body controls the immune system.
The three were distinguished by their “discoveries on peripheral immune tolerance,” the Nobel Committee In a statement.
From its social networks, the Nobel organization recalls that “our immune system is a masterpiece of evolution and that without a functional immune system, we would not survive”, so the works of these three laureate is another transcendental contribution to their knowledge.

“The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine of this year is about how we control our immune system to combat all imaginable microbes without causing autoimmune diseases,” said Marie Wahren-Herlenius, professor at the Karolinska Institute.
“The powerful immune system of the organism must be regulated, otherwise it runs the risk of attacking our own organs,” said the Nobel Committee.
The winners, Mary E. Brunkow, born in 1961, Fred Ramsdell, 64, and Shimon Sakaguchi, 74, “identified the guardians of the immune system, regulatory T cells, which prevent immune cells from attacking our own body,” he added.
Their findings have laid the foundations for a new field of investigation and have promoted the development of new treatments such as cancer or autoimmune diseases, the jury explained.
Nobel rewards discoverers of the micro -arian, fundamental in gene regulation
In 2024, the Nobel Prize in Medicine recognized US researchers Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their microarn finding, a new type of lowercase RNA molecule that has a crucial role in the regulation of gene activity.
In addition to each distinction, the prize includes a diploma, a gold medal and a check worth 11 million Swedish crowns (1.2 million dollars).
The delivery of these awards is extended until next week, as usual every year.
