The courts acquitted the former president of the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF), Edwin Oviedoof the murder of two trade unionists in a procedure initiated in 2016, the lawyer of the former sports leader reported this Thursday. “The innocence of Edwin Oviedo has been proven,” his lawyer, Mr. César Nakazaki, told the press after reporting the decision issued by the Superior Court of Justice of the La Libertad region (north). “The court decided to acquit him after verifying that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence,” he added.
In 2019, prosecutors requested a 52-year prison sentence against Oviedo, a sugar businessman who has always maintained his innocence. A court case forced him to resign from his position as president of the Federation in December 2018.
Oviedo took over as head of the FPF in January 2015 and helped revive the Peruvian national team, which participated in the 2018 World Cup in Russia after a 36-year absence from the competition. He spent a year and a half in preventive detention, then another year and a half under house arrest after being accused by the prosecution of being the “ringleader” of a “corruption network” and the mastermind behind the murder of two trade unionists shot dead in 2012 and 2015.
