Education dismisses more than 600 teachers due to abandonment of positions and serious misconduct

Santo Domingo. – The Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (Minerd) reported that more than 600 teachers from the Dominican educational system were dismissed for committing serious misconduct, especially for abandoning their position and receiving remuneration without working.

Of the total, 348 teachers requested their cancellation voluntarily and 279 were forcibly separated, due to serious misconduct and abandonment of their jobs.

The separations occurred during the period between the months of December 2023 and August 2024.

When referring to the causes that motivated the dismissals, the Human Resources Department explained that 80% were due to abandonment of their job and the remaining 20% ​​are related to other types of indiscipline, including: violence, sexual harassment, drug trafficking. and falsification of documents.

He also reported that the majority of acts of indiscipline were recorded in educational regions 10, of Santo Domingo II; 15, from Santo Domingo; 06, from La Vega, and 05, from San Pedro de Macorís.

The investigation showed that many collaborators in the teaching area were living outside the country or carrying out other activities while earning salaries between RD$70,000 and RD$90,000 at Minerd. To camouflage their non-compliance, they paid a substitute between RD$6,000 and RD$9,000 a month.

The cancellations were made after a deep and extensive investigation, which was carried out through Minerd’s Labor Misconduct Investigation Unit, made up of lawyers, psychologists, social workers and other professionals, and which had the cooperation of the Association Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) and the General Directorate of Migration.

Recently, the Minerd Workplace Misconduct Investigation Unit toured regional and educational districts to train center directors on the ethical and disciplinary components and taught them, through workshops, what the obligations and duties are. of the public servant and what are the consequences of not complying with those duties and how the State administration structure works.
