Santo Domingo. – He Ministry of Education issued a statement this Saturday clarifying that the recent embargo on the accounts of the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) It was not carried out for union or electoral reasons, but as a legal measure in response to the prolonged suspension of teaching in Barahona since the beginning of the school year.
«The paralysis of classes in that province, as well as in Azua and San Francisco de Macorís, has been promoted by a minority faction of the ADP, which has used the strikes as a strategy to promote its candidates, to the detriment of the right of students to quality education and the continuity of the school calendar,” the institution said in a statement.
“It is important to emphasize that the majority of teachers are committed to the well-being of students, but some leaders seek particular benefits, harming the most vulnerable,” said the Minister of Education, Ángel Hernández.
He added that in the specific case of Barahona, the situation has become alarming, since the main leader of the ADP in that town “has resorted to intimidating measures, including threats with weapons, to force other teachers to join the strikes, generating a climate of tension and fear in the educational community.
The MINERD called on Dominican society to demand that union leaders abandon these harmful practices and join the search for solutions to improve the educational system, “instead of becoming its main obstacle.”
