José Vicente Hare, lawyer for the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia, said that he hopes to meet again with Attorney General Tarek William Saab to discuss issues related to the closing of the judicial case of the opposition candidate who requested political asylum in Spain.
José Vicente Hare, lawyer for the presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform, Edmundo González Urrutia, said he is waiting for a meeting with the judicial authorities to close the case against the opposition leader.
Haro made this statement during an interview with Spanish Television. He said that he is waiting, following statements made by the Attorney General appointed by the defunct Constituent Assembly, Tarek William Saab, for a new meeting in which the aspects related to the judicial closure of the case will be discussed, once Edmundo González Urrutia has left the country and is in Spanish territory.
Haro and Saab have not met since September 4. That day, the lawyer delivered a letter written by the presidential candidate, in which he explained the reasons why he did not respond to the summons “as a person under investigation” issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office against him.
Haro explained that the meeting was purely institutional. He told the media that the defense of the candidate of the Unitary Platform hopes that the authorities recognize that the facts attributed to the candidate “do not constitute a criminal offense.”

He stressed that the purpose of the meeting with the prosecutor was to present and argue the details for which Edmundo González Urrutia did not appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office. In his opinion, and “in exercising his rights and preserving his integrity,” there were no guarantees for the candidate to respond to the summons.
He said that the defense team will later evaluate the legal actions that may be taken, always in favor of defending the candidate. Three days after that meeting, González Urrutia left the country for Spain, where he requested political asylum.
On September 13, Haro spoke at D-Night with Victor Amayadirector of SuchWhich on the occasion of the departure from the country of the opposition candidate with his wife, Mercedes de Gónzalez, on September 7. He said that González’s decision to request political asylum was due to the statements made by Attorney General Tarek William Saab on September 5, in which he ratified the arrest warrant for the candidate of the Unitary Platform, issued on September 2.
