José Vicente Haro, lawyer for presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, stated that the defense team is seeking to ensure that the authorities guarantee the rights established in the Constitution that refer to defense and due process “which were not present in the summons” issued by the Public Ministry against the candidate of the Unitary Platform and which he did not attend.
Jose Vicente HaroEdmundo González Urrutia’s lawyer, referred to the meeting he held with the prosecutor appointed by the defunct constituent assembly, Tarek William Saab, in which he delivered a letter written by the presidential candidate, in which the reasons why he did not respond to the summons “as an investigated person” issued by the Public Ministry against him were explained.
On the evening of August 4, Haro explained that the meeting was merely institutional. He told the media that the defense of the candidate of the Unitary Platform hopes that the authorities recognize that the facts attributed to the candidate “do not constitute a criminal offense.”
He stressed that the purpose of the meeting with the prosecutor was to present and argue the details for which Edmundo González Urrutia did not appear before the Public Prosecutor’s Office. In his opinion, and “in exercising his rights and preserving his integrity,” there were no guarantees for the candidate to respond to the summons.
He said that the defense team will later evaluate the legal actions that may be taken, always in favor of defending the candidate.
He noted that the defense team is seeking to ensure that the authorities guarantee the rights established in the Constitution that refer to defense and due process “which were not present in the summons, nor in the arrest warrant that in my opinion was not necessary to issue.”
He said that everything that was communicated was from a legal point of view, without entering into political considerations. He clarified that, on the latter, the spokesmen of the Unitary Platform or the Command with Venezuela will establish a position when they consider it necessary. “The declarations of a political nature will be given by the Unitary Platform,” he stressed.
“The MP behaved in an institutional way. The considerations and evaluations that the prosecutor has will be subjective. I am satisfied to have fulfilled the mission of presenting these arguments,” said Haro.
The Attorney General appointed by the defunct Constituent Assembly, Tarek William Saab, received the letter from Edmundo González Urrutia, in which the presidential candidate explains the reasons why he did not attend the three summons issued by the Prosecutor’s Office.
The document was delivered to Saab by José Vicente Haro, the lawyer of the standard-bearer of the Unitary Platform. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, “said lawyer, as well as his client requested by law: recognized the constitutional and legal powers of the Public Prosecutor’s Office as the holder of the criminal action to undertake and develop the investigations that may be necessary.”
Earlier, José Vicente Haro reported that Attorney General Tarek William Saab had summoned him to a meeting at 5:00 p.m. The legal defense of the candidate for the Unitary Platform said that they would attend to the request.
Speaking to the media outside the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), he said that he hoped to address the issue of the communication he tried to submit to the Prosecutor’s Office in the morning.
“We will explain the reasons why we believe the correspondence should be received and we will address the concerns that the prosecutor requests to be clarified,” Haro told the media before meeting with Saab.
