Edmundo González says he has “a plan” to return to Venezuela in January

Edmundo González Urrutia assured this Tuesday the 19th that he has plans ready to return to Venezuela and be sworn in as “president-elect” in the month of January.

“These plans are not revealed, because they already told me that they had a delegation waiting for me,” he indicated in a interview with NTN24, in reference to the threats of arrest as soon as he sets foot in the country made by Minister Diosdado Cabello and prosecutor Tarek William Saab.

González Urrutia, whom the United States recently recognized as president-elect, ruled out that his swearing-in or his government would be done from abroad. «My swearing-in will be in the terms of the Constitution, in Venezuela before the legislative bodies that are approved to carry out that swearing-in. Without a doubt.”

Regarding his departure from the country last September, he said that it was a strategic and “correct” decision because it is “more useful for the democratic cause abroad”, a decision that was communicated to the opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Regarding his tour of several European countries, in addition to meetings with the European Parliament, he pointed out that among the central issues, in addition to the demand for the elections, is the magnitude of the human rights crisis in the country, after the mass imprisonments after the July 28.

«That has been a central theme in our conversations (…) When we say that there are minor children in prisons sharing with adults. When we say that there are disabled people in prison. When we say that there are children with autism syndrome who are also detained. “That is something that surprises and draws the attention of our interlocutors,” he highlighted.

González Urrutia reiterated that these people must be released immediately. «They are prisoners who should never have been in that situation. Many have been arrested for simply expressing and expressing their position to the Government. That, in a democratic society, is unthinkable. “That will be one of the priority issues that we will focus on from the first day we reach our position, the position that the majority of the people gave us on July 28.”

He also said he hopes to speak with Marco Rubio, nominated as U.S. secretary of state, before his inauguration in January.

«I hope to be able to speak with him before January 10. However, I know his career, I have read a lot of his statements on autocratic regimes, I know what he thinks about the recovery of Venezuelan democracy,” he said.
