Edmundo González insists on the immediate release of political prisoners without waiting for laws

González Urrutia celebrates the release of political prisoners, but demands full freedom

González recalled the difficult situation faced by the families of those deprived of liberty, many of whom are on hunger strike. “Behind every political prisoner there is a family that resists. Families on hunger strike! They do it because they feel that they are left with no other option. They do it out of pain and anguish,” he said.

Edmundo González Urrutia, once again demanded this Monday the immediate release of political prisoners in the country, emphasizing that the approval of a law is not essential to return freedom to those who, in his opinion, were detained unjustly.

“Behind every political prisoner there is a family that resists. Families on hunger strike! They do it because they feel that they are left with no other option. They do it out of pain and anguish,” González said in a message published on February 16.

González stressed that the hundreds of detainees for political reasons must be released without delay, and that it is not necessary to wait for the approval of the Amnesty Bill by the National Assembly to make it a reality. “A law is not needed to release someone who was unjustly imprisoned. The decision to do so is needed, without delay,” the opposition leader wrote on the digital platform.

He expressed his solidarity with the families who have been waiting for news about their relatives since the beginning of the release process announced by the authorities on January 8, during a context of releases that, according to human rights organizations, has progressed unevenly and still leaves many people behind bars.

“Lists come and go. But they are not lists, wow, they are people. They deserve the same respect as any father, mother, son or brother,” González criticized in his statement, emphasizing the humane treatment that, in his opinion, should be given to each individual case.

In his message, the leader also reiterated his support for the families who demand justice. “I accompany each family that demands justice today. Immediate release is an act of respect for human dignity,” he concluded.
