Edmundo González called on the international community to redouble its efforts “for the restoration of democracy and freedom in Venezuela. The will of the people expressed on July 28 must be respected and we will make sure it is respected.”
The diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia On Tuesday, September 10, he sent a new message to Venezuelans, in which he assures that the fight to enforce the results of the presidential elections of July 28, which the opposition claims he won, will continue “until the end.”
“María Corina (Machado) and I assure you that this fight we started will continue until we achieve the objectives we set, until the end,” said the opposition leader in a message read by his daughter Carolina González, during a demonstration in front of the Spanish Congress of Deputies.
The Spanish Congress is discussing this Tuesday a possible Recognition of González Urrutia as president-elect of Venezuela, due to the rejection of the government of Pedro Sánchez to the results issued by the National Electoral Council on July 29, declaring Maduro the winner.
Both González Urrutia, Machado and part of the opposition claim that, according to the voting records in their possession, the real winner of the presidential elections was the diplomat with 67.3% of the votes. The failure to recognize the CNE’s announcements unleashed a wave of protests throughout the country that left at least 2,200 people arrested and 25 killed, according to the authorities.
The ambassador, now granted asylum in Spain due to “coercion”reaffirmed his “unwavering commitment” assumed on July 28. “My thanks go to all those who voted for me and also to those who could not do so due to the tricks of a National Electoral Council that prevented it.”
He also called on the international community to redouble its efforts “to restore democracy and freedom in Venezuela. The will of the people expressed on July 28 must be respected and we will ensure that it is respected.”
Edmundo González ended his message with the phrase: “Compatriots, do not be discouraged, I will not let you down.”
