Edmundo González claims that he was not coerced by Spain or its ambassador to go into exile

Edmundo González urges security forces to stop repressing protests

Edmundo González explained that Pedro Sánchez’s administration was committed to guaranteeing his safety from his residence to the Spanish Armed Forces plane and during his arrival in that country. These arrangements, he stressed, “were supervised and facilitated” by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

“I have not been coerced by the Government of Spain or by the Spanish Ambassador in Venezuela, Ramón Santos. The diplomatic efforts undertaken had the sole purpose of facilitating my departure from the country, without exerting any kind of pressure on me,” he said in a statement.

The accusations of allowing or concealing the coercion that González Urrutia himself said he received from Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and his brother Jorge Rodríguez, president of the 2020 National Assembly, were pointed out by the leader of the Spanish Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

He said he hoped that his statement would “clarify any doubts or misunderstandings regarding the nature of my transfer and reiterate my gratitude to the Spanish authorities for their support and commitment to the protection of human rights.”
