EDINSA receives the 2025 Colfecar Verde Prize for innovation in hydrogen transportation

Edinsa implemented hydrogen cells in postobon trucks, achieving lower fuel consumption and emission reduction.

Edinsa, postobon transport operator, was distinguished with the 2025 Colfecar Verde Prize during the Logistics Transport and Cargo Congress held in Cartagena.

Edinsa, Postobón Transport Operator, was distinguished with the 2025 Colfecar Verde Prize during the Congress of Transportation and Logistics Cargo held in Cartagena. The recognition, delivered by the Colombian Federation of Cargo Transporters (Colfecar), highlights the most outstanding initiatives in sustainability and environmental care in the transport sector.

The company was awarded by a project that incorporates hydrogen technology into primary transport trucksdeveloped together with Postobón and Renting Colombia, subsidiary of the Cibest Group. The pilot phase represented an investment of 250 million pesos and included the adaptation of hydrogen cells in ten diesel tractocamions. These cells use distilled water and, by electrolysis, separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules; Hydrogen is injected into the engine, which improves the efficiency of fuel consumption.

Research behind technology took more than six yearswith the participation of institutions such as the University of Antioquia and the Bolivarian Pontifical University. These entities accompanied the validation of the purity of the hydrogen produced, exceeding technical challenges such as corrosion in the engines.

The pilot results showed a reduction of up to 7% in fuel consumption and between 6% and 7% in CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to 91 tons less carbon dioxide per tractocamión per year. In addition, a better performance was confirmed in mountainous land, with savings of up to 9% in the use of fuel in high demand journeys, which shows the potential of this technology for the country’s geographical conditions.

The project positions Edinsa, Postobón and Renting Colombia as pioneers in sustainable mobility with hydrogen in Colombia. The incorporation of this system does not compromise the useful life of engines and opens a real opportunity to reduce fossil fuel dependence, contributing to the fight against climate change.

The alliance between the three companies has allowed other advances in clean mobility. Among them, the introduction of the first electric tractocamión in the beverage sector and the consolidation of a fleet of more than 250 vehicles with low or emission -free technologies, including gas, electrical and, now, hydrogen units.

At the global level, hydrogen is considered one of the most promising alternatives for transport decarbonization. With this initiative, Colombia joins that international trend, strengthening the energy transition and the adoption of solutions that promote a more sustainable future.
