Eddy Olivares: in the PRM government there will be no gag law

The vice president of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Eddy Olivares, assured that there will be no gag laws in a government of that political organization or of President Luis Abinader.

The PRM leader guaranteed that the creation of legislation that restricts freedom of expression will not occur in this government.

“The first thing is that in a government of the Modern Revolutionary Party and of comrade Luis Abinader there will be no gag laws, that will not happen,” said the PRM executive coordinator.

Olivares considered that President Abinader made an important and correct decision by creating a commission that will contribute to the National Congress, regarding the laws that can affect free expression.

The politician trusts that the laws that the Dominican Republic currently needs will be made, always fully and absolutely respecting the democratic conquests of freedom that the country has had and that, in his opinion, should be deepened and expanded.

“I think that is where the watermark is applied so that everything is in its place and that everything is fulfilled, I think that this will be done well,” said the Perremeist spokesman.

JCE must have a schedule ready

Interviewed by the journalist Federico Méndez, in the program Esferas de Poder, which is broadcast on Sundays from 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning, on RNN Channel 27, Olivares considered that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) should already have a schedule for the 2024 elections.

He warned that what happened in the municipal elections of February 16, 2020, which were suspended due to the inconveniences presented with the automated ballots in the municipalities with this voting modality, cannot happen again.

“In that sense, the Board already has to have its schedule, which must be fulfilled like a Swiss watch so that there are no errors, because errors in the electoral processes cannot exist, everything has to be planned,” added the former magistrate of the JCE. Likewise, he recalled that any of the activities of an electoral process that has not been fulfilled becomes a problem for the electoral assembly.

Olivares understands that, if the electoral reforms are not ready on time, the JCE must organize the elections with the current laws, which he assures have their defects, but also their very positive aspects and that they were an interesting advance for democracy.

They will not use State resources in campaign

Eddy Olivares stated that the PRM will not use state resources or campaign at the wrong time, as the Dominican Liberation Party has claimed. In that order, he said that the official organization will continue to comply with Law 33-18 on Political Parties and Organic Law 15-19 on the Electoral Regime. Finally, he guaranteed that this party will contribute more than any other to the integrity of the 2024 process.
