Ecuadorian professionals are left out of the international hiring boom

HECHO. El mercado laboral es cada vez más global, pero la búsqueda de opciones es compleja

Companies around the world are hiring more and more Latin Americans. Those hires grew more than 3,000%, but Ecuador is not benefiting.

The international hiring from Latin American professionals they grew 3,300% in the last year. In other words, more and more Business of Exterior looking for talent of the region to to work from remotely or face-to-face.

However, the Ecuadorian professionals participate marginally in this wave of opportunities. Less than 2% of those hired are of this nationality.

At the other extreme, around 70% of those recruited come from countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.

Incorporation of international talent

According to the international consulting firm Deel, the new circumstances created by the pandemic and the focus on increasingly global and digitized operations are two of the main reasons that drive companies to hire outside staff.

“Regardless of the size, public companies, multinationals, startups or small businesses, have the need to incorporate talent which is not always available in their markets. Although this is usually the first reason, they later perceive other benefits such as the value of diversity and the possibility of retaining professionals who seek to relocate for personal reasons, ”explains Natalia Jiménez, head of expansion for Deel in South America.

Within Latin America, economies such as Mexico and Chile are the most active in talent hunting. On a global scale, the focus is on the United States, Canada and the European Union.

Why are Ecuadorians staying out of this wave?

On the networks, every day, you can verify the constant interest of Ecuadorians for news and announcements about Job opportunities out of the country. That interest is greatest among young professionals that they are between the lack of employment and the low local wages.

However, 50% are almost immediately discouraged when checking the list of requirements and paperwork that must be met to access those opportunities.

Likewise, even for positions within other Latin American economies, high English levels. This becomes one of the main barriers if one takes into account that, according to a study by EF Education First, Ecuador is the worst country in the region with respect to the command of that language and is ranked 81st worldwide.

“English is the lingua franca of business. Even if you operate in a non-English speaking market, your professional oportunities they will be seriously compromised unless you can communicate in this language, “said Roger Darashah, co-founder and director of LatAm Intersect PR.

Influence of reading ability

On the other hand, one aspect that plays against Ecuadorians is that more than half of working-age adults do not have sufficient skills in reading comprehension, numeracy and problem solving. Even at the time of the start of the pandemic, 40% had no experience with computers and other technologies.

The most desired profiles outside

In the last year, Job opportunities they have grown for specific activities and skills. First, companies around the world are looking for programming specialists and professionals in areas such as electronic marketing, engineering, doctors and nurses.

Added to this are the profiles of specialists in the development and implementation of solutions and platforms for marketing and communications processes with knowledge in Java with Spring Boot, .NET, Python, JavaScript, with frameworks such as React or Vue.

Options have also been opened for technicians in hotel and tourism, pastry and heavy load handling.

In addition, they are looking for bilingual experts in digital marketing, with very good knowledge in Excel for areas such as planning, reporting and TAAG.

Optimize job search

María Esther Rodas, human resources consultant, commented that these preferences do not mean that there are no opportunities in other areas; But the important thing is that the applicant takes into account the profiles demanded by each of the countries to which they apply, since the possibility of accessing one of the vacancies for certain professions will depend on the demand in that country.

“Optimize your search and apply to vacancies in countries where your experience is highly demanded and not the other way around, since you must bear in mind that in most places nationals are usually prioritized,” he said. (JS)
