The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, announced this Friday a temporary closure of the country’s borders until next Monday, as a measure to “safeguard the welfare of the population and the sovereignty of the country” in the framework of the second electoral round, scheduled for this Sunday, April 13.
This “temporary special regulation” will limit “the entrance to the national territory of every foreign person from 4:00 p.m. (21:00 GMT) on Friday, April 11 until 23:59 (04:00 GMT) on Monday, April 14, 2025”, in the northern and southern border security areas of the country, according to a statement from the presidency released on social networks.
The same note indicates that an “operational, tactical and military control of the additional armed forces will be maintained, whose activity will concentrate on the main ports of the Ecuadorian coast-to know, Guayaquil, Puerto Bolívar, Manta and Esmeraldas-, as well as in other artisanal fishing points” to ensure the normal functioning of these strategic sectors. “
“For the National Government it is vital to ensure an environment free of violence to its inhabitants, avoiding and preventing any coercive action that prevents the democratic celebration of the electoral process or any aggression to the sovereignty of Ecuador,” the writing adds.
This announcement comes just two days before Ecuador celebrates this Sunday the second round of the presidential elections in which Noboa aspires to a second term, while the ‘Correísta’ Luisa González seeks to return left to power to the power. The surveys point to a technical draw between both candidates, so that the undecided and those who in the first round opted for other alternatives could opt for the result.
