Ecuador says “No” in referendum for new constitution and Noboa accepts defeat

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, recognized this Sunday the defeat in the referendum that he himself promoted and in which, among other issues, the establishment of a Constituent Assembly to draft a new Constitution was consulted.

“These are the results. We consulted the Ecuadorians and they have spoken. We fulfilled what we promised: ask them directly. “We respect the will of the Ecuadorian people”wrote Noboa, who did not offer statements in traditional media as he has done in previous electoral processes.

The president added that he will continue “fighting tirelessly for the country that you deserve, with the tools we have.”

With more than 93% of the votes counted, “No” prevailed in the four questions posedwhich included political and security issues.

On the question of the Constituent Assembly, the rejection reached 61.55% compared to 38.45% who voted in favor, while in the consultation on the presence of foreign military bases, the “No” received 60.50% of the votes, he said. EFE.

The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Diana Atamaint, pointed out that the result shows a marked trend in the four questions, although there are around 20% of minutes left to process, many with observations.

Ecuador: political reactions and support for the current Constitution

The result was celebrated by the Citizen Revolution, a formation led by former president Rafael Correa, who highlighted that The 2008 Constitution, approved during his mandate, was ratified again by the citizens.

“For the first time in the history of Ecuador, a constitution has been voted on by the majority of citizens twice. This marks a historical milestone,” Correa wrote in X.

The former Correísta presidential candidate Luisa González affirmed that “Ecuador defeated hatred” and highlighted the dignity of the people in the defense of their rights.

“This country unites to tell governments that the rights of Ecuadorians are not to be played with. There are a worthy people who today say no to your lies, corruption and destruction of the country,” he stressed.

In the other questions of the referendum, the “No” also won the elimination of public financing for the parties with 57.96% compared to 42.04% for the “Yes”, and the reduction in the number of assembly members with 53.41% rejecting compared to 46.59% in favor.

Noboa’s objectives and the context of the referendum

The president sought, through a new Constitution, implement more “heavy-handed” measures against organized crime, he pointed out EFE.

In addition, the plan contemplated economic reforms to attract foreign investment and promote employment by making the labor market more flexible.

With this referendumthere are already ten held in Ecuador in the last twenty years, mostly promoted by acting presidents to obtain citizen support for their political projects.

The vote passed largely calmly, although an altercation was reported in the province of Esmeraldas, where the president of a polling station was arrested for trying to introduce five false ballots, according to Interior Minister John Reimberg.
