Ecopetrol approved the investment for the Windpeshi wind farm in La Guajira, which will be the largest in the country and will quintuple the wind power today.
The Ecopetrol Board of Directors approved the resource allocation for the development of the wind project Windpeshiwhich will be built in the municipalities of Uribia and Maicaoin La Guajira. With this decision, the company gave the green light to its first fully developed, built and operated wind investment by Ecopetrol.
It is about the “final investment decision” (FID)a step that will allow progress in the construction of the park, which will have a installed capacity of 205 megawatts (MW). When it comes into operation, Windpeshi will quintuple the wind energy capacity currently installed in Colombia and it will be ten times larger than the largest wind farm in operation today in the country.

According to Ecopetrol, the project will produce around 1,006 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year and will allow avoid the emission of more than 140 thousand tons of carbon dioxide annually. This reduction is equivalent, according to the company, to remove nearly 90 thousand vehicles from circulation for one year.
Relationship with communities
The oil company explained that the investment decision was made after a technical process and after several months of dialogue with communities in the areas of influence of the project. Ecopetrol indicated that the territorial relationship has been developed in response to the request of the communities of hold direct talks in their own territories.
The company indicated that this process has allowed progress in coordination with local and national authorities to make the project viable and reiterated that the development of Windpeshi depends on a permanent presence in the regionbased on principles of participation and co-responsibility.
Energy for self-supply
Ecopetrol specified that the energy generated by Windpeshi will be destined mainly to self-sufficiency of the Ecopetrol Groupas part of his operations decarbonization strategy and strengthening the reliability of the National Interconnected System.

The project contemplates the installation of 41 wind turbines of 5 MW eacha medium voltage substation with a 180 MVA transformera 200 MW approved connection point and one 60 kilometer transmission line at 220 kilovolts.
The company noted that will keep investors, authorities and interest groups informed on the progress of the project, in accordance with current regulations.
