Economy with a negative first quarter: GDP with variation of -2%

The negative incidences of agriculture, livestock and electricity generation had an impact on a GDP of -2% in the first quarter of this 2022, according to the Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP).

An interannual variation of -2% was registered from January to March of this year. In this sense, from the point of view of supply, the negative percentage responds to the low performance of agriculture, livestock and electricity generation.

The MAG details that agriculture registered an interannual rate of -41.2%. During the first quarter there was the biggest drop in soybeans in history, as well as rice, sugar cane, cassava and other tubers.

Regarding livestock, forestry, fishing and mining, there was a year-on-year decrease of -8.7%. The numbers are explained by a lower level of slaughter of cattle and pigs, poultry and a decrease in eggs.

Manufacturing had year-on-year growth of 4.3%, thanks to the production of oils, chemical products, sugar, non-metallic minerals, paper, beverages and tobacco, garments, leather, bakeries, etc.

However, the production of meat, dairy products and other foods attenuated the positive variation of this sector.

Electricity and water, which includes binationals, reported a year-on-year decrease of -11.1% in relation to the same period last year, due to the reduction in the water flow of the Paraná.
