Mexico and the United States have an intense bond that goes beyond sharing history and 3,180 kilometers of border: we are united by the trade agreement, a very important economic relationship, we are the second trade partner of the northern country
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said when highlighting the relevance of reaching agreements for the benefit of both peoples during the meeting with his US counterpart, Joe Biden.
When defining priorities in their bilateral meeting, he indicated that they will be migration and agreements to face the economic situation with an emphasis on inflation and security, based on respect for sovereignty. In security, the presence and collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is maintained, but under another regulation that requires the Mexican government to report on its actions; they cannot act on their own, nor order what Mexico carries out in its security policy.
The President pointed out that the excesses
of the Mérida Initiative nor of the Fast and Furious operation (under the government of Felipe Calderón), derived from an agreement between the governments to legally introduce weapons into Mexico that caused many deaths, and placed particular emphasis on migration, based on the proposal center that will raise: What we want is for migration not to be forced, for migration to be optional and, of course, completely legal. He recalled that under the government of Franklin D. Roosevelt the Bracero program was implemented, in the context of World War II, as an economic collaboration scheme. On the eve of his trip to Washington, López Obrador ended his conference stating: “Without courage there is no future; Without fundamental changes, the problems are not solved. Transformations are required, that is the approach, that is, we are going to change. And that Rubio does not accept… What is his name? Marco Rubio. That he doesn’t accept… What’s the name of the one from Texas? Ted Cruz. Or the governor of Texas, but what you have to think about is the well-being of all Americans and all Mexicans.”
