The Private special economic zones (ZEEP) will allow Peru to attract investments in technology, fishing, agribusiness, among other sectors, said the Vice President of Internationalization of the USIL, Juan Carlos Mathews.
“These are industries that have a drag that will benefit small and medium enterprises. We must organize a Roadshow to attract investments; to begin with we can prioritize the United States and Brazil,” the former Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism told Peru21.
He also noted that these areas will also benefit foreign trade, even more in a context of uncertainty for tariffs imposed by the United States. In addition, he recalled that on average 7.4 companies participate in the value chain of each exporter in Peru.
However, he questioned that in Parliament the creation of each of the ZEEP was pending, among which are Chancay, Huarán, Aucullama, Huacho, Ancón, Callao, Iñapari and Concepción.
For this reason, Mathews considered that it is urgent that the legislative of green light to the creation of at least one of these spaces to give a sign that these areas work.
“It is an advance to have a regulatory framework, but that is not enough. What has to be done now is to inform how and when at least one will start working. When there is an area it will be a good sign,” he explained.
In addition, he stressed that it is an advantage that offers the operators or users of these spaces a 0% income tax rate (IR) for a period of five years.
Meanwhile, former Minister of Economy and Finance David Tuesta said that each special economic zone must be approved taking into account the geographical characteristics and economic impact it would.
“To know the impact that these areas are going to have, you have to be clear about the income to which the State will give up (for 0% of IR), charged to the benefits that this type of space will bring,” he added.
