EBC launches special programming for Black Consciousness Week

To celebrate Black Awareness Month, marked by the national holiday of November 20th, the Brazilian Communication Company (EBC) launches the “Vozes Negras: Em Alto e Bom Tom” campaign and presents special programming in its vehicles, reinforcing the commitment to diversity and representation.EBC launches special programming for Black Consciousness Week

The initiative proposes to give visibility to black narratives that build Brazilian culture and identity, with content that goes beyond celebration: films starring black artists in TV Brasilmusic and interviews on National Radio and in MEC Radio and coverage of the Black Women’s March, including bulletins, live links and on-site participation by journalist Luciana Barreto.

TV Brasil

The Black Women’s March takes place in Brasília (DF), on November 25th, celebrating 10 years since its first edition. The journalism of TV Brasil organizes coverage of the event’s program, with the on-site participation of presenter Luciana Barreto for the Brazil Afternoon Reporterin Brasilia.

The last time the demonstration took place nationwide was in 2015, when 100,000 black women marched against racism, against violence and for good living.

Furthermore, the public television channel also produces materials for the Brazil Reporter that address the history of racism in Brazil through a free digital collection. The initiative brings together pedagogical content and presents an interactive timeline with laws and decrees that established racial inequality, based on a survey carried out with more than 90 black professionals.

From Monday (17th), the film schedule of TV Brasil reserves a representative selection for Black Awareness Day: The premiere is with The Kiss on the Asphaltfrom 1981, directed by Bruno Barreto, at 9:30 pm.

The week continues, on Tuesday (18), with A person is what they are born forfrom 2004, directed by Roberto Berliner and Leonardo Domingues, at 9:30 pm; on Wednesday (19), it’s the turn of the documentary This is Pelefrom 1974, directed by Eduardo Escorel and Luiz Carlos Barreto, at 9:30 pm, then at 10:30 pm and at 4:30 am, it is shown Aunt Ciatafrom 2016, directed by Mariana Campos, Raquel Beatriz.

On Thursday (20), the session starts at 9:30 pm with the film Sand Captainsfrom 2011, directed by Cecília Amado and Guy Gonçalves; while on Friday (21), at 9:30 pm, the film Michelle and Obamafrom 2016, directed by Richard Tanne.

On Saturday (22), the highlight is the documentary Gilberto Gil – Tempo Reiat 9pm, 1996, under the direction of Andrucha Waddington, Breno Silveira and Lula Buarque de Hollanda. Sunday is reserved for production Abdias do Nascimentofrom 2011, directed by Aída Marques, at 9pm.

THE TV Brasil still airs, on November 22nd, at 11pm, the special The Black Pearl of Sambaa tribute to the strength, poetry and balance of Jovelina Pérola Negra. The show recreates important moments in the career and personal life of the artist, who has established herself as one of the great representatives of samba.

THE Trail of Letters re-airs, on Wednesday (19), at 11pm, the program with actor and playwright Clayton Nascimento. In the interview, the artist shares his artistic trajectory and the process of constructing the monologue Monkeyswhich established him in Brazilian theater, addressing racism as a central theme.

MEC Radio

This Black Consciousness Week, MEC Radio presents special programming that celebrates art, music and black representation.

Conversation with the Author (Sunday, 16th and 23rd, at 12pm). The radio opens the week with an unprecedented interview with Nei Lopes, writer, composer and reference in Brazilian culture. In the chat with journalist Katy Navarro, Nei presents his new book, Dictionary of human rights and related matters, which translates almost 500 entries into popular language, offering tools to expand understanding about citizenship and rights.

THE Free Jazz (Thursday, 20th, at 9pm) pays homage to National Zombie and Black Consciousness Day in Brazil, featuring the work of artists who fought against racism and social inequality through music.

Node MEC antenna (Monday to Friday, 6pm)the musical program highlights Brazilian composers and instrumentalists such as Moacir Santos and Dom Um Romão.

THE MEC Brasilia antenna (at 6pm) scheduled interviews with the following artists: Aída Kellen, lyrical singer, on Monday (17); Jhoninha Medeiro, guitarist and double bassist, on Tuesday (18); Thamiris Nascimento, violinist from OFG, on Wednesday (19); Iago Pereira, Spalla of the Camerata Centro-Oeste and member of OSFAB, on Friday (21).

National Radio

With the purpose of sharing and referencing the talent of black artists, the National Radio developed a specific schedule.

National Afternoon São Paulo (Thursday, 20th, at 3pm). Journalist Anna Karina de Carvalho prepares a special report on the inauguration of writer Ana Maria Gonçalves, the first black woman to take up a chair at the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Furthermore, the program will only have black singers in the musical program. And, on the cultural agenda, Leonardo Martins highlights the activities related to the celebration of November 20th.

National Afternoon Rio de Janeiro (Wednesday 19th at 3pm). The Rio edition of the program will cover the big event called Viva Zumbi, in Niterói.

Sunday Specials (at 10pm). The classic Rádio Nacional weekend attraction designed to celebrate Brazilian artists will have programs dedicated to black performers throughout the month, such as Alcione (11/16), Carlinhos Brown (11/23) and Luiz Melodia (11/30).

Art Space (Monday to Friday, 17th to 21st, at 12:30pm). The Rádio Nacional program prepared Black Consciousness Week, with prominent artists from the Brazilian scene: on Monday (17), the focus will be on instrumental music, with guitarist, composer and arranger Jimi Oliver; on Tuesday (18), the theme will be literature, with the presence of Brazilian writer Cristiane Sobral; on Wednesday (19), the edition celebrates the photographic exhibition at Casa Niemeyer with artists who value Afro-Brazilian identity in Black Consciousness Month; on Thursday (20), Black Consciousness Day, the program opens up space to share the programming of the National Museum of the Republic, between November 20 and 22, in the external area; on Friday (21), there is the participation of the creators of the Onda Negra Festival, which takes place in Ceilândia, focused on the diversity of rhythms, appreciation of independent artists and a lot of energy to move the territory.

National Express (Thursday, 20, at 10am). The attraction will open with a text about Black Awareness Day and present a song that refers to the theme.

On the Trail of History (Saturday, 22nd, at 1pm). The program interviews journalist Laurentino Gomes, author of the trilogy of books “A Escravidão”.

World Music (Sunday, 23rd, at 7pm). In honor of Black Awareness Day, the program highlights stars from Cape Verde and Angola. The attraction will also be shown on MEC Radio on Thursday, 20, at 10pm.

Soul Blues (Saturday 22nd at 7pm). DKHarrelll – “Talkin Heavy”, debut album by the young guitarist who is emerging as one of the great promises of contemporary blues. Attraction will be displayed on MEC Radio also on Saturday, 22nd, at 10pm.
