“The Lord only expects us to welcome the gift of peace with gratitude and collaborate with him being ‘peacekeepers’, in all personal and social spheres”, Monsignor Sergio Gualberti said in his homily during the celebration of the Easter Vigil held this Saturday at the Santa Cruz Cathedral.
“The true peace that the Lord leaves us is based on the evangelical values of justice, freedom, truth and love, as Pope Saint John XXIII wrote in his Encyclical ‘Peace on Earth,'” said Gualberti and added that We live in times where peace is more necessary than ever.
He recalled the war in Ukraine by pointing out that “Many countries are mired in the horrors of war, like in Ukraine, where the victims, Most of them are civilians, unarmed women and children. The innocent blood of these victims and that of all the conflicts reaches Heaven and implores that the weapons remain silent and stop sowing death and destruction.”

He also appealed to have empathy with these events. “NOr let us think that these wars are a matter that does not concern us. Pope Francis, on the plane returning from his apostolic visit to Malta a few days ago, said: ‘We are all guilty, the Lord have mercy on us, on all of us because… they want the scheme of war and not of peace’.
Gualberti also indicated that “this logic of arrogance and violence is behind so many of our attitudes and that of society.. Often, to solve controversies and problems, force and violence are used instead of dialogue and agreement”.
The religious emphasized that “being peacekeepers in circumstances like these requires us to leave the circles of death and courageously bear witness to the peace of the Risen One, looking towards the new horizons of imperishable goods…Being peacekeepers also implies overcoming indifference, awakening from passivity and decisively undertake the path of radical conversion, of a change of mentality, of heart and of conduct.
He also asked fordo not spend your life for the idols of pridepride, greed and power that divide, confront and sow death and, on the contrary, let us clothe ourselves with the sentiments of Christ: love, reconciliation, universal brotherhood, harmony and peace”
Finally, the religious leader pointed out that “an arduous task awaits us, however, let us not be cowardly, the Risen One is with us and today he repeats to each one of us what he said to his disciples: ‘Do not be afraid, it is I’, the Lord of love, of life and of history that has overcome hatred, evil and death”, said Gualberti.
