East of the Valley of Mexico is the most affected by sinkholes

Sinking is not only related to possible damage to homes, as in the case of Ulysses, but also to the deterioration of streets and avenues, damage to drinking water and drainage infrastructure, as well as a greater risk of flooding due to depressions on the surface.

“The majority of the areas with subsidence are in the east of the city and it is worrying especially in the area of (Calzada) Zaragoza, in the area of the Colonia del Mar (in Tláhuac), in Chalco, neighborhoods that had floods last year and this year,” says Morua in an interview with Political Expansion.

One of the priority works for the capital’s Government, headed by Clara Brugada, should be the rehabilitation of Line A of the Metro that runs on Calzada Ignacio Zaragoza and connects the capital with the east of the State of Mexico when going from Pantitlán to La Paz.

“The renewal of Line A of the Metro is very important, it is the first railway line we had and it presents many sinkholes along its route, but we should also think about the neighborhoods surrounding (Calzada Ignacio) Zaragoza, especially in the parts of Nezahualcóyotl and Iztapalapa where sinkholes are up to 35 centimeters per year,” indicates the also professor of Public Policies at the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Aragón from UNAM.

Subsidence is a phenomenon in which an area presents progressive subsidence over a large surface, with a surface that can cover colonies and even cities, according to Dora Carreón Freyre, researcher at the UNAM Geosciences Center, cited by UNAM Gazette .

Soil compaction and deformation is caused by the extraction of land, as in mining, or of water, as in the extraction of liquid from the subsoil through wells.

Some of the most affected neighborhoods are Valle de San Lorenzo, Predio El Molino and Del Mar in Tláhuac with subsidence ranging from 26 to 35 centimeters per year, while Ampliación Santa Catarina, in Valle de Chalco, the subsidence is between 35 and 31 centimeters per year.

While in Iztapalapa the areas of Santa María Aztahuacán, Ermita Zaragoza, El Salado and Solidaridad sink up to 31 centimeters a year. In Nezahualcóyotl, colonies such as Las Palmas and Las Fuentes register subsidence of between 31 and 35 centimeters.
