Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced national mourning for 7 days due to the tragedy that occurred in his country when two powerful earthquakes, one of 7.8 and a 7.5 aftershock, shook a large part of Turkey early Monday, February 6.
“Due to the earthquakes that occurred in our country on February 6, 2023, national mourning was declared for seven days. Our flag will be hoisted at half mast until sunset on Sunday, February 12, 2023, throughout our country and representations abroad,” Erdogan communicated through his social networks.
Almost all European countries have offered help by urgently dispatching rescuers fighting against time to rescue people trapped in the rubble.
It is estimated that more than 2,000 people have died and more than 6,000 injured as of the last official report, although the authorities believe that the number will increase greatly as they can enter more buildings collapsed by the earthquake.
