The São Paulo State Department of Health issued an alert of increased risk for the reintroduction of measles in the country during the summer due to the cruise season, with stopping points on the coast of São Paulo. In total, 38 cases of the disease were reported in the country in 2025, with two cases in São Paulo. 
There is no measles outbreak in the country currently.
According to the ministry, this is a time of intense circulation of tourists, including from other countries, and there are active outbreaks of the disease in several regions of the world, “which requires continuous surveillance and attention to the population’s vaccination status”.
People traveling for tourism or work and those who will be exposed in crowds should be aware of the MMR vaccination (measles, mumps and rubella), preferably at least 15 days in advance of potential exposure.
In addition to vaccination, the Secretariat recommends auxiliary measures to avoid exposure:
- Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing;
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use alcohol gel;
- Do not share glasses, cutlery and food;
- Try not to put your hands over your mouth or eyes;
- Avoid crowds or poorly ventilated places;
- Keep frequented environments always clean and ventilated;
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
“Upon return, if suspicious symptoms appear up to 30 days after the trip, such as fever, red spots on the body, accompanied by cough or runny nose or conjunctivitis, the advice is to immediately seek a health service, inform your travel history and avoid circulation in public places”, informs the SES in a note.
Despite the registered cases, Brazil maintains the disease-free country certificatesince most cases are of imported origin and there is no internal circulation of the virus in an endemic form.
