The determining factor in the reduction of poverty in the recent four years was the decision to double the real value of the minimum wage, said the coordinator of the University Program of Development Studies of the UNAM, Enrique Provencio.
After the figures that the INEGI showed last Wednesday, the researcher pointed out that to maintain progress and avoid setbacks, social guarantees must be fulfilled to resolve the lack of the population.
Federal, state and municipal budgets will have to privilege access to education and health, care, water and housing services, among other items that have not had priority in the allocation of resources.
He explained that the increase in admission into households, “mostly from that work derivative, in particular of wages, as well as pensions and contributory retirements (IMSS and ISSSTE) and the increase to remuneration” made the difference.
The set of reforms made in 2016 to separate the increase in the minimum wage of other prices, such as increased fines and income, allowed salaries in 2017, especially since 2019.
Licage in Education and Health
The academic pointed out, however, that there is still a high level of non -compliance with social rights, and a complex way to go to satisfy them.
Some social deficiencies are greater than those in 2016, in particular in the issue of educational lag and health services.
In 2024, he said, 24 million people continued in educational lag, 44 million lacked access to health care, 63 million had no social security and 18 million suffered from basic services.
