The year 2024 is the first since 2021 to report an increase in this crime. The spiral of violence that afflicts Mexico and that since 2016 showed an increase in intentional homicides, had a turning point in 2021. That year there was a 3% reduction, going from 36,773 to 35,700.
The following two years there was also a decrease when 33,287 were registered in 2022 and in 2023 there were 31,062.
However, this year part of the increase is due to the internal dispute in the Sinaloa Cartel that has triggered an increase in violence in Sinaloa. That state, according to figures from the Sinaloa Attorney General’s Office, 1,016 intentional homicides were recorded, 79% more than the 566 that occurred in 2023.
The federal government has held the United States jointly responsible for the violence in Sinaloa. Both former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President Claudia Sheinbaum assure that the intervention of the US government to arrest Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada sparked an internal dispute in the Sinaloa Cartel which has resulted in an increase in deaths.
“How did this situation occur in Sinaloa? Because the arrest of this organized crime figure has not yet been clarified, what was the participation of the United States agencies? How did this situation arise? because from there this wave of violence begins in Sinaloa,” commented the past December 30 .
The increase in homicides began last September. That month closed with 144 intentional deaths, which represented an increase of 220% and in October there were 188.
2024 was the most violent for Sinaloa since 2018, that year 1,123 were registered.
