Due to the US blockade, Venezuela still cannot vote at the UN

Venezuela ratified at the UN its commitment to multilateralism

Venezuela will continue in 2023 without being able to exercise its right to vote in the United Nations General Assembly, this as a result of the accumulated non-payment by Caracas before the multilateral entity due to the economic blockade imposed by the United States on Venezuelan accounts abroad.

The General Assembly took note this Wednesday of a report sent to it in the last few hours by the head of the United Nations, António Guterres, in which it is confirmed that Venezuela continues to accumulate an excessive debt due to non-payment of the contributions that correspond to it, collects EFE. According to that document, Venezuela should pay just over 76 million dollars to recover the right to vote in the Assembly.

It is worth remembering that at the beginning of November of last year, during the act regarding the Celebration of the 22nd Anniversary of the Cuba-Venezuela Agreement, President Nicolás Maduro explained that Venezuela could not exercise its right to vote to support Cuba in the vote in the United Nations General Assembly because the financial blockade that the US imposes on the country prevents “having bank accounts to pay dues and obligations at the UN”

«They have removed us from the voting system, we have the right to speak, but we do not have the right to vote; product of the sanctions,” the president explained on that occasion, after the session in which, for the thirtieth consecutive year, the resolution condemning the unilateral coercive measures of the US blockade against Cuba was approved by the United Nations General Assembly.

Maduro then demanded Venezuela’s right to vote in the General Assembly of the United Nations and stressed that despite the blockade that prevents it from paying the commitments with the multilateral entity and therefore from voting in the debates, Venezuela fully exercises the right to speak in the highest instance of the multilateral body.

Maduro stressed on that occasion how the situation of Venezuela in the United Nations had already been denounced before the Secretary General, António Guterres, and demanded that he “solve this problem for Venezuela.”

«It is an obligation, a duty of Guterres to resolve that Venezuela; Having the resources, the money, I can have the bank account to pay and have the right to vote there at the UN,” Maduro stressed.

For Cuba’s diplomatic triumph over the US at the UN, with 185 of the 189 possible votes at the UN, Maduro stressed that despite not being able to vote “Venezuela stood there with its truth, with its Bolivarian voice; to say we are with Cuba… against the criminal blockade of 60 years that has martyred, tortured and persecutes Cuba”.

There are already 928 unilateral coercive measures against the country

It is worth remembering that, after the extension of the License number 31 now 31Bfrom the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which allows negotiations of former members of the National Assembly of 2015 (expired in 2021) with US citizens and entities, the US Department of the Treasury increased to 928 unilateral coercive measures against Venezuela.

«OFAC license to the “AN 2016” becomes sanction 928 against Venezuela. The Venezuelan Anti-Blockade Observatory has incorporated License No. 31B, issued by OFAC – The United States, such as unilateral coercive measure 928 against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”, published the Vice Minister of Anti-Blockade Policies, William Castillo on Twitter.
