The mayor of Punta Arenas asked tourists not to climb the iconic cypress of President Gabriel Boric’s campaign, so that “it is maintained for more generations.”
“One thing is to go see it and another is to climb (…) We want this tree to be maintained for more generations, as it has been until now,” Radonich told The Mercuryadding that, according to a report requested from a forestry engineer, the cypress suffers “important deterioration” as a result of the constant climbs to its crown.
“What we are looking for is not to prohibit, but to recommend,” stressed the communal authority.
It is worth mentioning that the Municipality of Punta Arenas decided to end tourism in the popular tree on Colón Avenue, after a large number of people constantly came to try to climb to the top. According The Southern Pressthe cypress will now have a sign advising visitors to “Do Not Climb”.
