The landfill of Duchesswhich for years was a symbol of pollution and constant smoke in Greater Santo Domingo, today shows a significant transformation after the Dominican Government began an intervention aimed at protecting the health of the population and mitigating the environmental impact.
This will benefit 3.8 million inhabitants of Greater Santo Domingo, as part of the national policy to eliminate open landfills and improve quality of life.
The program contemplates a total investment of 110 million dollars to improve the comprehensive management of solid waste.

Environmental transformation of a historically degraded space
During the event, President Abinader highlighted that this intervention goes beyond the closure of a landfill, as it is a comprehensive transformation process supported by environmental engineering solutions, impact control, risk management and ecological restoration, with the aim of progressively recovering a historically degraded space.
The president stated that since 2020 his government has assumed the solution to the problem of open-air landfills as a national priority, highlighting that the Duquesa landfill for years affected the health and environment of more than 3.8 million inhabitants of Greater Santo Domingo.
Likewise, he indicated that the critical situation, marked by fires and constant smoke, forced urgent action to correct an environmental problem that directly impacted the quality of life of the population.
The head of state explained that a comprehensive plan is being executed with short, medium and long-term actions, supported by international cooperation IDB, JICA and AECID, guaranteeing a structural and sustainable solution.
In addition, the governor highlighted the transformation of the Duquesa landfill as the central axis of this policy, highlighting that the project was designed to go from an environmental liability to a healthy and useful space for the community.
The president highlighted the creation of the trust for solid waste management, which has already allowed the transformation of 30 landfills throughout the country and the progressive closure of open-air landfills.
In conclusion, he stated that the Duquesa project and the sanitation of the Gurabo canyon, in Santiago, will serve as a national model for the proper management of solid waste and will be recorded as the most important environmental transformations in the recent history of the country.
