Drug trafficking: increasingly linked to power

Drug trafficking: increasingly linked to power

With holders of state portfolios linked to the accused narco leader, Alberto Koube, the A Ultranza operation exposes the close link between drug trafficking and power.

Theresa Rojas

After the Ultranza operation, in the midst of the dismantling of the drug trafficking and money laundering structure, the close relationship between organized crime and power is exposed, since the head of the National Secretariat for the Administration of Seized and Forfeited Assets (Senabico), Teresa Rojas, acknowledged having contact with Patricia Rodríguez, the ex-wife of drug leader Alberto Koube.

“I met Patricia when she was a prosecutor and she was an assistant; Until a few years ago we kept meeting. I also know one of Koube’s sisters, who is also my neighbor; that is all the relationship that exists,” Rojas said.

Likewise, the head of Senabico confirmed that she usually plays paddle tennis with Rodríguez on a court in Trinidad, participated in the religious ceremony of Koube’s daughter’s wedding and occasionally visited her house. The statements are remarkable, because Senabico is the institution in charge of retaining the assets seized from Koube.

Another factor that demonstrates how organized crime is linked to political power is the case of the now former head of the National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), Joaquín Roa, who appeared as the owner of the yacht seized during the mega-operation, which appears to be of great value. approximately US$ 400 thousand; Apart from him, Roa has not made his sworn statements since 2013, when he also became head of the SEN.

As Grupo Tapyracuai SA is the main supplier of the State, public documents indicated that the firm began to appear in the bidding participations in 2017, when Horacio Cartes was still president. Many contests of the group were carried out for the SEN, with which there are two striking awards worth G. 900 million, in truck rentals.

Again there is talk of another laundering method and, in this way, a series of information regarding the financial asset investigation around the organized crime to be dismantled is also beginning to be unleashed.

CONFLICT OF INTERESTS
For the lawyer and master in politics and management, Pilar Callizo, there is less and less modesty on the part of the authorities who get involved with people linked to drug trafficking and money laundering, because if the authorities had a minimum of ethics, they would resign to avoid this types of conflicts of interest.

“They cannot continue in their positions as if nothing happened. In our country, corruption gradually fed into daily and permanent habits; our big problem is that those who must sanction all this are part of the problem”, determined the professional.

In this regard, he indicated that drug trafficking and money laundering come from power itself, but it is also so widespread that it is no longer possible to determine who is or is not involved in organized crime.

“So much money is stolen that currently it is not possible to know the origin of all the flow, as before, at least it could be observed. This country is becoming one completely dominated by narco-politics, as it is permeating all social strata and family groups,” Dr. Callizo stressed.

In the case of the head of Senabico, the analyst commented that there should be no type of conflict of interest and she cannot deny that she was not aware of the origin of the entire Koube flow.
