The president of the Board of Users of Middle and Lower Piura, Macario Silva Vílchez, said that crops will probably be affected by the lack of water resources.
“We are in difficult times due to the lack of water and suddenly crops will fail. There are 60,000 small farmers in the region who must be taken into account,” said Silva Vilchez.
He added that thousands of hectares would be lost due to this problem. For each hectare, the loss would be 8,000 soles. He said that there are areas where crops are 50% developed and if there is no water, they would be lost entirely.
In response to this, the Chira Piura Basin Water Resources Council (CRHC CHP), made up of various actors involved in water management, agreed to request the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) Piura to process the declaration of a state of emergency due to imminent danger, given the water shortage in the Piura region. This decision responds to the risk and the impacts that it may generate in the economic and social development of the region.
For his part, the mayor of Marcavelica, Enoc Ojeda, was emphatic in stating that the voice of the farmers should be listened to, since, being small, they do not receive support from the State.
Meanwhile, the President of Congress, Eduardo Salhuana, said that in the next few days they will approve the bill that promotes the productive, competitive and sustainable transformation of the agricultural sector towards modern agriculture, a law that has been presented by Congresswoman Maricruz Zeta. “We have listened to the farmers and in the next few days we will approve the Agrarian Reform law,” said Salhuana.
