The driver’s license It is the only document that enables a person to drive through the streets of Chile, so losing it or having it stolen implies a problem that must be solved as soon as possible. Fortunately, there is a procedure to block the lost or stolen license and request a duplicate without having to take tests.
The first step is to temporarily block the license so that it enters the Civil Registry database as a lost document or stolen. This block is free and lasts two business days. To block the license, you can enter the Civil Registry website or call 600 370 2000. You must indicate the RUT number and the first surname of the license holder’s mother. If the license is found before the term expires, it can be unlocked by the same means.
If after two business days the license is not found or it is known that it will not be recovered, a definitive block must be made. This blocking is also free and is done in one of the Civil Registry offices throughout the country. You must present your valid identity card and request the blocking certificate, which will be used to request a duplicate of the license after you have lost it or it has been given to you stolen.
With the blocking certificate in hand, you can request a duplicate of the driver’s license in the municipality where it was originally obtained. In addition, the current identity card and a document proving residence must be presented. The municipality will prepare a copy of the previous license without requiring any type of examination. The cost of the duplicate varies according to each municipality, but is usually around 10 thousand pesos.
It is important to temporarily block as soon as possible after the loss or theft of the driver’s license, to prevent a third party from misusing it and causing problems for the owner. It is also convenient to make a police report for loss or theft, to have legal support if necessary. Finally, it is recommended to keep a digital or physical copy of the license, to facilitate its identification and recovery.
